Statement on Aretha Franklin
Monday, August 27, 2018 by Author: Admin.
Dr. David Marion

On behalf of the brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., I convey my most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Ms. Aretha Franklin. She has finally found the angel she famously sang of, and he has carried her into eternal rest in the arms of our Lord and Savior. I take solace, and I pray the family does as well, in the immovable fact that Ms. Franklin was loved and admired around the world. It's important to note that she was so beloved for much more than her incomparable voice and God-given musical gifts.

Her musicality was unparalleled, for certain, but Aretha was equally loved and respected for the impact she had on our nation and world, both through and beyond her music. She was a sterling example of perseverance, inner strength, character and integrity. She stood up when it counted. As a result, she will always be remembered for standing firmly on the right side of history, whether that was as an advocate of women's rights, civil rights for African-Americans or, most broadly, simply the right of all people everywhere to have the opportunity to live lives surrounded by peace and equality.

Aretha was not afraid to use her gifts -- and put her celebrity potentially on the line -- as she worked a strong role during the Civil Rights Movement. Against the advice of her famous father, the late Rev. C.L. Franklin, she offered to pay the bail of controversial activist Angela Davis. She said at the time that "Angela Davis must go free. Black people will be free. I've been locked up (for disturbing the peace in Detroit) and I know you got to disturb the peace when you can't get no peace." "I have the money; I got it from Black people - they've made me financially able to have it - and I want to use it in ways that will help our people."

Aretha's strength and fortitude saw her showered with many honors during her remarkable life. Standing tall among them would be her status as an honorary soror of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Our Delta sisters chose well, we believe.

Most importantly, the men of Omega take eternal solace in the fact that Aretha Franklin knew the Lord most high, and sought to serve Him in song and deed during her days walking this earth. We believe her labor will now be rewarded for all eternity.

As Jesus told Martha in the biblical Book of John, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die."

We believe Aretha's faith will safeguard her soul's passage to a better world free of earthly suffering and strain. Until we believers see her again, she has left a tremendous, broad legacy of superlative music and life testimony to see us through our days on this earth. May God bless Aretha's family and those she loved in the days ahead.
