Brunch and Ball 2016 NECN News 1/31/16

Brunch and Ball Mentoring Program was co created over 6 years ago by then Executive Director of the Dorchester YMCA Ms. Kathy Townsend and Francois Fils-Aime member of the international community service fraternity Omega Psi Fraternity, Inc of Iota Chi Chapter. Members of this fraternity include Michael Jordan, Ronald McNair, Cedric Maxwell, Langston Hughes, Steve Harvey, Shaquille O'Neil, Chris Collins and Ray Lewis.

The purpose of forming this program was to provide a safe haven and mentoring services for over 30 young males from the ages of 13-19 years old that live in the Dorchester and surrounding communities due to the increasing crime, teen and gang violence that plagued these communities. The program takes place the third Sunday of each month from 1-3pm at the Dorchester YMCA where we have a professionals from the Boston area who speak to the teens about relevant and current topics that will inspire and motivate the teens to be successful and graduate high school and go to college or post secondary education where ultimately they come back to the community and give back. The mentoring program also has a community service component to it while the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity mentor the teens and build relationships with them while having brunch with the teens. Finally, the mentors and teens play a friendly game of basketball against one another at the end of each program.

The partnership is between the Dorchester YMCA who provides the space under now Executive Director Ms. Andrea Baez and Teen Director Reggie Jean where they also split the cost of feeding the teens with the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. We are still looking for partners where we can expand the program and off set the expenses such as the food and field trips where we would like to take the teens along with providing additional workshops and bringing in other resources to this program.

Any sponsorship opportunities for this much needed program in the community can be discussed with Francois Fils-Aime at francoisfilsaime@yahoo.com.
