Omega Psi Phi’s 38-Year Tradition of Honoring Wichita Seniors Continues with Annual Banquet

The Gamma Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. once again brought holiday cheer and heartfelt appreciation to the seniors of Wichita with their 38th Annual Wendell Smith Senior Citizens Appreciation Banquet. Held at Wichita State University’s Marcus Welcome Center on December 15, the event welcomed more than 150 seniors who enjoyed a home-cooked meal catered by Jodee B Catering and received gifts from the fraternity brothers. This longstanding tradition has become a cornerstone of community service for the chapter, exemplifying Omega Psi Phi’s dedication to uplifting and honoring elders in the community.

The banquet, named after the late Wendell Smith, a dedicated member of the chapter, is a labor of love that the brothers ensure happens every year, regardless of the circumstances. “We want them to know we honor them and that they’re worthy of recognition,” said Chapter Advisor Larry Burk. The evening was filled with laughter and joy, highlighted by Santa (portrayed by Joseph Patrick, Jr.) and his mischievous elf, Harry Willis. With Brother Rodney Jones serving as the event chair and Col. Johari Hemphill as Basileus, the chapter continues to strengthen community bonds through service and celebration.
