Brother Christian Menefee: Houston’s New Voice in Congress

Brother Christian Menefee (ΑΔΛ ’07), former Harris County Attorney, has won the special runoff election for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, NBC News projects, defeating former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards in a Democrat-versus-Democrat contest. Menefee will fill the vacancy left by the death of Rep. Sylvester Turner in March 2025, restoring representation to a heavily Democratic Houston-area seat that has endured an extended period of transition and loss.
His victory also carries national weight, narrowing the Republican House majority and underscoring the importance of every contested seat. Menefee campaigned on affordability, accountability, and protecting communities from government overreach, drawing support from prominent Texas Democrats and earning the endorsement of the Houston Chronicle for his readiness to lead in challenging political times.
Brother Menefee’s election reflects the continued tradition of Black leadership and public service. As he steps into a district long represented by historic figures such as Barbara Jordan, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Sylvester Turner, Menefee begins a new chapter—one focused on justice, opportunity, and the future of Houston’s voice in Congress.
