Remembering Bro. Steven J. Perry (ΤΨ ’16): A Life of Leadership and Service

The Brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. mourns the tragic loss of Bro. Steven J. Perry (ΤΨ ’16), a devoted public servant, proud Durham native, and cherished member of the Mighty Tau Psi Chapter.

On Sunday (March 1, 2026), Master Trooper Perry lost his life in the line of duty while serving with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. He was only 30 years old. His passing has left his family, fellow troopers, fraternity brothers, and the greater Durham community in deep sorrow.

Before he wore the uniform of a state trooper, Bro. Perry wore the maroon and gray of North Carolina Central University. A former offensive lineman for the Eagles, he played in 30 games from 2014 to 2017 and started every game his senior season. He was a key contributor to NCCU’s 2016 MEAC Championship team, helping lead the program to a historic Celebration Bowl appearance.

Teammates and coaches remember him as patient, disciplined, and steady — a leader who waited his turn and, when called upon, commanded the center position with confidence and strength. That same quiet leadership defined his professional life. After graduating in 2018 with a degree in criminal justice, Bro. Perry answered a higher call to serve. He joined the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, rising to the rank of Master Trooper and dedicating nearly seven years to protecting Durham County.

Bro. Perry’s journey reflects the very principles Omega men strive to uphold: manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. From the offensive line to the front lines of public safety, he lived a life rooted in service to others. He protected the very community that raised him, embodying courage and commitment until his final moments.

Today, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow troopers, and the Brothers of Tau Psi. May they find comfort in knowing that his legacy of leadership and sacrifice will endure.

Bro. Steven J. Perry’s watch has ended, but his impact remains. His life stands as a testament to duty, honor, and brotherhood. May his memory forever be a blessing.
