The Challenges and Opportunities That Lie Ahead

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

From the Desk of Sedrick Spencer

Brothers,

On behalf of our 41st Grand Basileus and myself, to all of our members, we would like to congratulate the new President of the United States, Joe Biden, and Vice President, Kamala Harris, and we are pledging our patriotic support as they begin the hard work of leading America forward.

Currently, our nation is facing major, unprecedented crisis on multiple fronts: the worst pandemic in a hundred years, the most severe economic crisis since the Great Depression, widening racial inequities, and a foiled attempt to overturn a free and fair election.

Last year, we witnessed blatant attempts to disenfranchise millions of Americans and watched powerful politicians push discredited claims of voter fraud in minority communities. The January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol has brought home in vivid terms what’s at stake.

As Omega men, we have always been on the front line in the battle against structural racism and racial inequalities in cities and communities across the country.

We help organize and empower those communities, and the great challenge today is the need to protect and expand the right to vote. You have seen what we can accomplish when we mobilize that vote. The recent record turnout occurred due to years of organizing and an all-out effort to expose and combat voter suppression, and Omega and our allies played a pivotal role in the outcome of the November election and the more recent Georgia runoff races. Omega men made a difference, and this type of impact is something we must continue to advocate for.

I encourage you and all our fraternal members across the nation to become actively involved in the work. There’s no time to lose, and preparation counts. We are already looking ahead towards the 2022 midterm elections when Americans again cast their votes in some highly competitive Congressional, legislative and thirty-six gubernatorial races.

“The work” means contributing to campaigns that help advance our communities, with the same kind of efforts that made the November and the Georgia runoff victories possible. It means helping community organizers and aiding in grassroots efforts, and helping to contact and encourage voters, especially young Black males. It means knocking on doors once it becomes safe to do so again.

Right now, a great and easy place to start is by looking up the name of your US Senators, Congressional Representatives, State Legislators and other local officials at Elected Officials | USAGov and following them on social media and subscribing to their newsletters.

Brothers, we not only have a chance, but an obligation, to get involved, and make the most of this moment by building on our hard-fought electoral wins, and helping our nation achieve the dream of justice for all. Help us, as we walk the walk and demonstrate how Uplift–that commitment of each and every Omega man to share his gift to help others—is at the very heart of what Omega stands for.

In Friendship,
Sedrick Spencer
