A Son Returns: Bro. Dr. F. DuBois Bowman Named 13th President of Morehouse College
ATLANTA — In a historic homecoming that blends scholarship, service, and brotherhood, Morehouse College has named renowned public health leader and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Brother, Dr. F. DuBois Bowman (11-Ψ-91), as its 13th president. A 1992 graduate of the college, Dr. Bowman will assume leadership on July 15, 2025, succeeding Dr. David A. Thomas, who has led the institution since 2018.
Dr. Bowman brings to Morehouse a legacy of academic excellence, visionary leadership, and unwavering commitment to health equity. Currently serving as the dean of the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health, he oversees one of the nation’s top-ranked public health institutions, with over 1,300 students and a research portfolio exceeding $100 million annually. Under his leadership, the school has launched groundbreaking interdisciplinary initiatives in areas like firearm injury prevention, infectious disease control, and social determinants of health.
“Dr. Bowman’s record of visionary leadership, his deep commitment to academic excellence, and his lifelong dedication to Morehouse make him the ideal choice to lead the College into its next era,” said Board of Trustees Chairman Willie Woods.
A trailblazer in biostatistics and data science, Dr. Bowman has used his expertise to address pressing public health issues, including neurological and mental health disorders such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, and schizophrenia. His work has helped advance more personalized approaches to treatment while also addressing how environmental factors influence brain health in youth.
A proud initiate of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., through the Psi Chapter in Fall 1991, Dr. Bowman has remained closely connected to his alma mater—not only as an award-winning alumnus but also as a father. One of his sons graduated from Morehouse in 2024, and another is currently enrolled. In 2019, he received Morehouse’s highest alumni honor, the Bennie Trailblazer Award, named after legendary President Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, for his mentoring and efforts to build a pipeline from Morehouse and Spelman to graduate programs at Michigan.
Dr. Bowman holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in biostatistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He previously held academic positions at Columbia University and Emory University, further cementing his status as a national leader in health equity and higher education.
Now, as he returns to the institution that shaped him, Dr. Bowman steps into a role that is both personal and profound. “Returning to Morehouse as its 13th president is the honor of a lifetime,” he said. “This institution shaped who I am—instilling a commitment to excellence, justice, and impact. I am excited to partner with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and supporters to build on our legacy and write the next chapter of Morehouse’s transformative story.”
With the torch passed, and the mission clear, the House welcomes one of its own to lead it forward—with purpose, vision, and an unrelenting march toward excellence.
