DURHAM, NC — On April 17, 2026, the North Carolina Central University (NCCU) campus witnessed a momentous occasion as Captain Robert E. Gaddy Jr. was officially sworn in as the university’s new Chief of Police.

Surrounded by a robust community of supporters—including university faculty, staff, students, alumni, members of the Divine Nine, and law enforcement partners from across the state and beyond—the ceremony was a powerful testament to the respect and admiration Chief Gaddy commands.

Chief Gaddy is a deeply rooted member of the Eagle family. A proud NCCU alumnus of the class of 1993, he is currently furthering his education by pursuing a master’s degree at his alma mater. As an esteemed member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (Beta Phi chapter, fall 1996), Bro. Gaddy brings a profound commitment to service, uplift, and leadership to his new post.

His appointment follows a distinguished career in law enforcement that spans over three decades. Joining the Durham Police Department in 1995, Chief Gaddy spent more than 30 years serving in critical roles, including District 2 Commander, Assistant Commander in Special Operations and Criminal Investigations, and as a dedicated member of the Selective Enforcement Team and various specialty units. Before retiring as a captain in 2022, his exceptional service and leadership were recognized with the prestigious 2015 Mark Tucker Memorial Award.

Beyond his direct precinct duties, Chief Gaddy has been a steadfast advocate for the profession, holding vital leadership roles within the Fraternal Order of Police at both the national and North Carolina state levels, and maintaining active membership in key law enforcement associations.

In his new capacity as Chief of Police at NCCU, he will oversee the university’s comprehensive patrol and security operations. Leading a dedicated department that includes 3 lieutenants, 23 sworn officers, and 12 security officers, his extensive expertise will be crucial in maintaining a secure, supportive environment for the entire campus community.

We look forward to his visionary leadership and the continued, positive impact he will undoubtedly have on campus safety and student success at North Carolina Central University.
