Brother Tony Holder—A Legacy in the Skies
Brother Tony Holder (A ’70) has carved an extraordinary path in aviation, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations. His journey began with no prior knowledge of aviation—he had never been on an airplane or even visited an airport before college. But fate intervened when he chose to take Air Force ROTC while his roommate opted for Army ROTC. Taking the pilot qualification exams without prior exposure, he excelled, becoming the only candidate in his group to pass every requirement. With a promise from the Air Force to send him to pilot training upon graduation, his career took flight.
After serving in the Air Force, an unexpected opportunity arose when a Tuskegee Airman, working as a recruiter, reached out to him. This recruiter had been contacted by FedEx in search of qualified African American pilots. Within months, Holder was hired, joining a company known for its commitment to diversity and excellence. He acknowledges FedEx’s founder, Frederick W. Smith, for valuing capability over color, ensuring that the company recruited highly skilled African American pilots rather than mere token hires.
Holder’s career has been more than just flying jets—he has embodied the role of a mentor and role model. A chance encounter at a Kroger supermarket proved life-changing when he approached a young African American stock boy and asked about his aspirations. The young man, eager to become an engineer and jet pilot, found a mentor in Holder, who guided him toward achieving his dream. That young man later became a Marine Corps pilot, earning his wings and carrying with him a watch Holder gifted him upon retirement—a watch that had circled the globe.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Brother Holder remains humble, stating that he never saw himself as a legacy—just a man doing his job. Yet, his journey is a testament to perseverance, excellence, and the power of mentorship. Walking in the footsteps of those before him, he now serves as a beacon for those who will follow. His story exemplifies the responsibility of Omega men to uplift the next generation, showing them that success is within reach. Brother Tony Holder’s legacy is not just in the skies but in the lives he has touched and the futures he has shaped.
