Howard University, renowned for its rich history and illustrious alumni, boasts many landmarks that symbolize the institution’s legacy of excellence and achievement. Among these landmarks stands the Sundial, affectionately known as “The Dial,” a timeless tribute to the contributions of African-Americans and the enduring spirit of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
Constructed in the heart of the main campus quadrangle, The Dial serves as a poignant reminder of the fraternity’s commitment to honoring its heritage and uplifting the community. Conceived by Lamp Leroy Clay and designed by architect Bro. Ralph Vaughn, the Sundial was unveiled on February 1, 1929, in a ceremony at Rankin Chapel. Presented by the Lampados Club of Alpha Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the monument was dedicated to Benjamin Banneker, a pioneering figure in African-American history.
Brother Rohulamin Quander (Alpha ’64) reflects on the significance of The Dial and its connection to Banneker’s legacy. Standing on the historic “long walk” of Howard University’s campus, Quander emphasizes the enduring importance of recognizing the contributions of African-Americans throughout history. He underscores the fraternity’s role in preserving and celebrating this legacy, noting that The Dial stands as a testament to the resilience and achievements of generations past.

Beyond its symbolic significance, The Dial holds practical importance as a gathering place for members of Omega Psi Phi. Every Friday, especially during the Spring and Fall seasons, the quadrangle comes alive with the sounds of step and song as brothers congregate around The Dial to celebrate their brotherhood and honor the fraternity’s principles. Led by the Basileus, these gatherings serve as a vibrant expression of unity and camaraderie, reaffirming the fraternity’s commitment to service and community.
As Howard University continues to evolve and grow, The Dial remains a steadfast symbol of resilience, pride, and unity. It stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations, reminding all who pass through its shadow of the enduring legacy of Omega Psi Phi and the indelible mark left by Benjamin Banneker and other trailblazers in African-American history.
