The Lambda Zeta Chapter of  Omega Psi Phi Fraternity held a solemn march to the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia, honoring the contributions of enslaved individuals and families who built and maintained the university. This annual event highlights the chapter’s dedication to preserving African American history and celebrating the progress made from those challenging beginnings.

Bro. Joshua Amos, Basileus of the Lambda Zeta Chapter, explained the significance of the event, stating, “We hold this tour almost annually to not only give people information about the history but also to give back and show some importance to them.” As the first Black Greek-letter organization at UVA, Lambda Zeta’s efforts underscore their commitment to education, history, and service.

The Memorial to Enslaved Laborers serves as a poignant reminder of the University’s past, ensuring the names and contributions of those who labored there are not forgotten. UVA alumnus Bro. Gary Flowers reflected on the enduring significance of the memorial, quoting scripture: “Remove not the ancient landmarks for which our mothers and fathers set.” Flowers, who has been affiliated with the university for over 30 years, emphasized that the fraternity’s mission goes beyond social activities to include meaningful service and upliftment of the community.

“We have a good time partying, but we give service to the community by sharing uplift with the Charlottesville area,” said Bro. Flowers.

This march and the fraternity’s ongoing initiatives demonstrate Omega Psi Phi Fraternity’s deep connection to African American history, culture, and progress. Through acts of remembrance and service, the Lambda Zeta Chapter continues to honor its founding principles and the legacy of those who came before them, ensuring their contributions are recognized and celebrated for generations to come.
